As outdoor barbecue season commences, the itch to douse yourself in mosquito repellent spray or lotion becomes irresistible. But how do you know which repellents are safe to use? Homemade bug repellents are a safer option and they are easy to make. Store-bought bug repellents often contain the chemical DEET. The National Pesticide Information Center has found that some individuals whose skin comes into contact with the chemical suffer adverse reactions. We have some homemade bug repellents to help you go “au natural” this summer, just in case! Essential oils are a popular ingredient in natural mosquito-be-gone remedies because of their healing and bug repellent properties. Oils that derive from the mint family, like spearmint or peppermint, produce insecticidal effects. Lavender essential oil is relaxing and soothing, and is safe to use on children. You can add a few drops of various essential oils to a room diffuser to keep bugs away from your living areas. But if you’re looking for a portable bug-be-gone, read on! These three homemade bug repellents use the potent repellent properties of essential oils to keep you bite-free (and chemical-free) while grilling and gardening these next few months!

Small brown jars with a dropper on a table
Essential oils contain bug repellent properties. They mix well with agents like alcohol and witch hazel to craft swift and simple natural sprays.
For a less labor-intensive project, or if you’d rather spray on your mosquito repellent, try this quick essential oil and lavender water recipe.
Fresh mint leaves on a wooden table
Forage your garden for herbs. You can mix them with boiling water for a homegrown remedy.
All out of essential oils? You can also concoct a strong homemade spray with dried or fresh herbs. See if you have any in your garden already!
