See how a creative design plan turned the space above a garage into a cozy haven for overnight guests.
With a large family, and more grandchildren on the way, these homeowners wished for a finished apartment to sleep as many family members as possible but also provide a comfortable space for lengthier stays. They turned to Gainesville, GA based designer, Maggie Griffin, for a solution.
An Evolving Project
Maggie had wrapped up her design work on three levels of her clients’ main house, but the couple wasn’t quite ready to stop improving the way their home worked for real life. With four married adult children and a steady stream of grandchildren, they had a wish list that’s instantly relatable: more space for family to land comfortably, without disrupting the rhythm of the primary house.

The solution was hiding in plain sight. Above their four-car garage, there was untapped potential just waiting to become something special-an apartment designed for out-of-town visits, weekend sleepovers, and those in-between seasons when an adult child needs a soft place to land. The ask was ambitious: fit in an eat-in kitchen, living space, laundry/pantry, full bath, and as much sleeping room as possible.
A Fresh Mood
Rather than echo the more formal tone of the main residence, Maggie approached the apartment like a change of scenery. “I wanted this apartment to feel like an escape,” she explains-a fun, inviting contrast that still feels thoughtful and elevated. That vision guided every decision: cheerful color, practical finishes, and smart details that anticipate the realities of a busy, growing family. It’s that blend of both pretty and prepared that makes the space so successful.

Performance fabrics bring durability without sacrificing style. Storage is layered in everywhere it can be. And because family life doesn’t always follow a schedule, Maggie added blackout drapes in every room. It’s a small touch that makes a huge difference when naps happen at random. or when the living room becomes sleeping quarters because, as she puts it, “you never know when an air mattress may be inflated!”
Room-by-Room: Designed for Real Comfort
From the start, Maggie’s process was based on the way this space would truly be used: short stays, long weekends, holiday gatherings, and the kind of casual flexibility that keeps everyone happy.

Living Space:
The living area pulls double duty as both lounge and overflow sleeping zone. That’s where Maggie’s emphasis on performance and comfort really shines. It’s welcoming but resilient enough to handle the wear and tear that comes with grandkids, suitcases, and constant changeovers.
Kitchen:
Maggie calls the kitchen her favorite, and it’s easy to see why. A small but highly functional galley-style layout keeps essentials within easy reach, while an eat-in island makes the whole apartment feel social and relaxed. The finishing touches elevate it: beautiful tile, custom cabinetry, and a pair of brass étagère-style shelves that add lightness and a hint of polish. Rather than an afterthought, the kitchen became a design moment for Maggie.
Pantry/Laundry:
One of the smartest decisions in the project is the double-access pantry/laundry room. The homeowners needed storage in a big way, but the apartment also had to feel easy to move through. Giving this hardworking space access from more than one point keeps circulation going so it doesn’t become a bottleneck, and it allows storage and utility to exist without stealing comfort from the layout.
Bath:
With guests and kids in mind, the full bath is designed to be both charming and durable but also functional, and fresh, with personality built in through pattern and finish selections.
Sleeping Spaces:
The homeowners’ favorite feature is how many beds Maggie managed to tuck in without the apartment feeling crowded. Built-in queen beds create that “sleepover magic” feeling with cozy, intentional, and surprising efficiency.
The Problem-Solving That Makes It Work
Every great guest space walks a fine line: it has to be generous, but it can’t waste an inch. Here, the big challenge was balancing valuable storage with livable flow. Maggie solved it with smart circulation, multipurpose rooms, and details that make the apartment flexible enough to support everything from quiet weekends to full-family overnights.

In other words, it’s not just extra square footage, it’s a well-planned experience for creating years of family memories.
