Craftsman design instantly brings to mind visions of Victorian spaces and echoes of Frank Lloyd Wright. Since its rise to popularity in the early 20th century, the design approach is resurrected time and time again through home designs, marrying together modern elements with storied arts and crafts details. This kitchen, designed by Salt Lake City’s cityhomeCOLLECTIVE, combines nods to craftsman design with a cottage feel, resulting in a space that’s airy and eye-catching.
This kitchen resides in a 1912 Craftsman home in Salt Lake City, and the kitchen was renovated to reflect modern times. “We wanted to create a modernized kitchen that could age well with the house and not compete with its history,” Senior Designer Pamela Jewell says.
Pamela explains that the design process started with the needs of space, use and additional appliances. “We studied historic colors, existing millwork and opportunities to blend old and new,” she says. The team spent four months fine-tuning the design and confirming the materials, and the construction process lasted five months. “The trick with old houses is that they are really tricky,” Pamela says. “A surprise load-bearing beam made us think on our feet, but we were able to work it out thanks to our amazing contractor and millworker, as well as our clients for understanding that surprises happen.”

The cabinets wash the kitchen in a sea of soothing hues. Painted in Benjamin Moore’s “Nob Hill Sage,” the cabinets are practical as well as pretty. Pamela says, “The best feeling is opening up the cabinets and noticing the dovetail joints and particular custom detailing for organization—we love tidy!” She advises, “Let your cabinetry be the showstopper. Take the height to the ceiling and focus on the symmetry of the cabinet front sizes and orientation.”
The “Liuki Ball” pendant lights from Mater inject modernism in an otherwise craftsman-meets-cottage kitchen. Pamela says, “This was our opportunity to add a little bit of modern into the space. We all loved the simplicity and unique design of the pendant, and the tone of the wood tied in the butcher block counter of the island perfectly.”
