Do you have a stubborn sideboard or buffet you don’t quite know how to style? We asked stylist and content creator Claudia Reese for her expert tips.
Originally found secondhand, this sideboard was the exact size I needed for my living room, and I could see through all the original dark-red paint to visualize what I genuinely wanted.
Transforming this piece with new hardware and loads of white chalk paint took a bit of time, but it was easy.
Now, this sideboard has that perfect vintage look I was after and adds to the all-white style that’s dominated by a large wall of collected mirrors, all of which are painted white or soft, neutral tones. I like to keep everything white and bright in the whole room, as you can see from my collection of ironstone and light furnishings.
When it comes to the top of this sideboard, it’s the perfect spot to add a little bit of soft color. The top is also large enough to display a generous arrangement of flowers, a few of my favorite fall accessories and items I’ve collected over time.
It’s fun to change the look of this room from season to season by only restyling the top of this new and improved furniture piece.

Claudia Reese’s Sideboard Styling Tips
Do:
- Start with a great focal point such as a beautiful vase of seasonal flowers. Living elements such as flowers and pumpkins keep your look from being too predictable.
- Group objects in odd numbers and varying heights. Here, I have several groups of three objects; some are alike, some are not. Create clusters of objects in varying heights.
- Stacking books and small items is a terrific way to add height to a grouping and balance the composition.
- Add something personal to any area you’re styling. This is your home, so make sure you give yourself the opportunity to personalize your home with treasured mementos and meaningful gifts.
Don’t:
- Don’t place objects in a straight line. Stagger them in a natural way from front to back to add depth and dimension.
- Don’t forget to think about vertical space. The round basket propped up behind the flowers adds contrast and textural interest.
- Don’t disregard tones and color schemes. For instance, a brightly colored object thrown into this muted autumn vignette would be jarring.
- Don’t go for a symmetrical look. Have fun and add layers of items you love. Just keep in mind the balance of the accessories you’re placing.
